The AC in HVAC stands for Air conditioning. Air conditioning refers to the process of getting rid of unwanted heat and moisture from the interior ambient environment of a space occupied by people. The air conditioning system is installed in interior space to provide thermal comfort for occupants of the room. The air conditioning system is installed in all kinds of interior environment as long as it is inhabited by people even animals. Also we can find the air conditioning system installed in places where electronic devices like computer servers, power amplifies that generates much heat to provide a cool environment free of humidity. So air conditioning systems are installed in the interior of residential apartments, office spaces and other form of commercial space, cars and buses, airplanes, boats and ships.
Air conditioner employs a mechanism that uses fan to distribute air that has been conditioned to an occupied room. The conditioned air provides thermal comfort and improves interior air quality. This cooling can either be achieved through what is called the refrigeration cycle or desiccants. Air conditioning system can be based on electric refrigeration. This type of AC units range from small units that can keep a small bedroom cool, (such units can be carried by a single adult) to massive units that are technically installed on the roof of office towers that can cool an entire building. On the other hand AC units can also be based on desiccants (chemicals effective in the removal of moisture from the air). We could also have AC units based on subterraneous pipes which can distribute the heated refrigerant to the ground for cooling.

Types of Air Conditioning System.
1. Cooling Only Split-System: This AC system combines indoor air handling unit and an outdoor condensing unit. The split systems are commonly found in residential or small commercial buildings. One advantage of these systems is that they have the highest energy efficiency rating (EER) of all the available AC systems.

2. Cooling Only Packaged-System: A packaged system as compared to the split system is a single unit. It combines all the components that are described in the split system. The packages system typically works in a way such that it is installed outside the building and the air indoor is “ducted” from the building to the system and back through an air distribution system.

3. Chilled Water System: The chilled water system provides cooling though the pumping of liquid water throughout the building to “chilled water coils”. A cooling plant is needed for the water to be at a cold temperature. This cooling plant is typically referred to as a chiller plant.

4. Window Air Conditioners: As the name suggests, the window air conditioner is typically installed in a window or fitted in an opening in the wall. The window areas is limited in the size of space it can cool. It is built to cool small spaces.
